Beware of new UPI scams in 2025! Learn how fraudsters operate and the best ways to protect yourself from phishing, fake QR codes, and more.
With over 14 billion UPI transactions per month in 2025, digital payments are booming—but so are scams. Fraudsters are using AI-powered phishing, deepfake voice calls, and fake QR codes to steal money from unsuspecting users.
This guide reveals the latest UPI scams in 2025 and actionable steps to protect yourself.
🔴 1. AI-Generated Phishing Calls
How it works: Scammers use AI voice cloning to impersonate bank officials or family members, urging you to “verify your UPI PIN” or “claim a refund.”
Red flags:
Calls from unknown numbers asking for UPI details.
Urgent requests (“Your account will be blocked!”).
🔴 2. Fake QR Code Scams
How it works: Fraudsters replace legitimate QR codes (e.g., at shops, parking lots) with stickers of their own UPI IDs.
Red flags:
QR codes that look tampered with.
No payment confirmation notification.
🔴 3. UPI Mandate Fraud
How it works: Scammers trick you into approving a recurring UPI AutoPay mandate, draining your account over time.
Red flags:
Requests to “authorize a small test transaction.”
Mandates from unknown merchants.
🔴 4. Screen-Sharing Scams
How it works: Fraudsters convince victims to share their phone screen (via Zoom/TeamViewer) and steal UPI app credentials.
Red flags:
Requests for remote access to “fix an issue.”
